Briefly, the aims of the Convention are: firstly, to create a forum for those of all political persuasions and none who support independence; and secondly, to be a national catalyst for Scottish independence. The Scottish Independence Convention will work to achieve this purpose in the following ways:

    1. To advance the cause of Scottish Independence and to raise the profile of debate on independence within Scotland and beyond.
    2. To provide a forum in which Scottish political parties, civic organisations and individuals can cooperate to that end.
    3. To contribute ideas and proposals to political parties on increasing the powers of the Scottish Parliament and the procedures required to establish a fully independent Scottish state.

    • Scotland as a nation is entitled to self-determination, and to become an independent state when that becomes the will of the majority of the Scottish people.
    • The establishment of an independent Scottish state with a written constitution would be subject to the assent of a majority of the Scottish people following a national referendum.
    • The Scottish people for this purpose is to be identified in civic, not ethnic, terms: all those who make Scotland their main home have equal rights to participate in the choice for or against independence. Racism is unacceptable in our politics and society.
    • Progress towards, and achievement of, independence must be solely by democratic and peaceful means. Human rights, international law, and the role of the United Nations in world affairs must be upheld and respected.
